Race and nationality in Dubai
As of 1998, 17 percent of the population of Dubai was made up of UAE nationals, the remaining 83 percent being foreign nationals.
Approximately 85 percent of the expatriate population (71 percent of the total population) was Asian, around three percent of the total population was categorised as “Western”.
There was an additional 16 percent of the population living in collective labour accommodation who were not identified by ethnicity or nationality, they are assumed to be primarily Asian.
A quarter of the population trace their origins to Iran, but many have citizenship.
