Religion in Dubai

Like most of the region, Islam is the official state religion of the UAE but, because of Dubai’s vast expatriate community, it also has large Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Sikh communities.

Dubai is realatively tolerant of other faiths.

Non-Muslim groups can practice their religion freely within their own houses of worship, which they can build by requesting a land grant and permission to build a compound. Groups that do not have their own places of worship may use the facilities of other religious organisations or worship in private homes.

Non-Muslim religious groups are permitted to advertise group functions but may not proselytise or distribute religious literature.

This behaviour is strictly prohibited and can result in criminal prosecution, imprisonment, and deportation for engaging in behaviour offensive to Islam.
