Dubai and the Al Maktoum family
The Al Maktoum family, like the ruling Al Nahyan family of Abu Dhabi, is a branch of the powerful Bani Yas Bedouin clan. The Al Maktoums are descended from the Al-Falasi section of the Bani Yas, who were the dominant power in most of what has since become the UAE.
In 1833 Maktoum I bin Bati bin Suhayl and about 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe took over the emirate of Dubai and established the Al Maktoum dynasty.
The Maktoum lineage’s rule runs unbroken from Maktoum I bin Bati bin Suhayl to present ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
