First records of Dubai

The earliest mention of Dubai dates back to 1095 and the “Book of Geography” by Abu Abdullah al-Bakri the Andalusian-Arab geographer.

In 1580 the Venetian pearl merchant Gaspero Balbi visited the area and wrote of Dubai’s pearling industry.

Documented records of the town of Dubai exist only after 1799.

Going back to the 1820s, there are references by British historians to Dubai under the name of Al Wasl.
